From ever-emerging COVID-19 variants to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the refugee crisis, much faces us in the world today. This Women’s History Month, however, we’re also focused on an urgent local issue — one that too many, particularly women, have had to face.
Sexual violence hurts everyone. But in New York State, if someone chooses to have a drink and then is later a victim of sexual assault, the rape statute does not apply. This is the Voluntary Intoxication Loophole — and this legal loophole means assaulters cannot be charged with a sex crime because someone who becomes voluntarily intoxicated is not considered “mentally incapacitated” for purposes of giving consent.
In 2019, State Senator Alessandra Biaggi introduced a bill that would close this loophole. Support for the measure has grown, but more is needed — sign the petition to help.
On April 20th, the Cura Collective will host a panel discussion and fundraiser for services for sexual assault victims in New York City. We hope you will join us to raise awareness and support victims of sexual assault.
